The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking an Industry Officer, Landcare to provide a critical role at Custodial Operations, Beechworth Correctional Centre.
About the Business Unit
Corrections Victoria is a business unit of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS). Corrections Victoria's vision is ‘Safer prisons, safer people, safer communities'. Our mission is to have ‘A safer, smarter system with a skilled and supported workforce, that enables people in our care to make better decisions'. Beechworth Correctional Centre is a minimum-security facility with a focus on preparing the men with necessary skills needed to achieve successful outcomes and reintegration.
The prison's primary purpose is the reintegration and preparedness of people in our car for transition to release. Beechworth Correctional Centre is made up of ten separate industries & services: Farm, Horticulture, Landmate, Kitchen, Metal Fabrication, Timber, Grounds & Gardens, Community Teams, Warehouse & Recycling, and Maintenance where there is a strong focus on employment training, and work readiness.
About the Role
Reporting to the Industry Supervisor, the Industry Officers are responsible for management and delivery of specific outcomes within prisons industries. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement, confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate people in our care.
This role is primarily focused on Landmate but Industry Officer should be flexible and open to learning new skills as the necessity to rotate and support other prison industries as the business needs demand is a requirement of the role
Industry Officers assist with the management of prisoner employment, safe operating procedures and other OH&S legislative requirements and compliance with industry procedures. They are also responsible for conducting searches and escorts, surveillance, observing and assessing the people in our care's behaviour, operating a variety of security and industrial equipment, collating information, and preparing reports.
An Industry Officer plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing, and reviewing practice and procedures relating to the recently released Corrections Practice Framework. As some of our Industries operate 7 days a week, Industry Officers may be required to work across a 7-day roster.
Some of your duties will include:
- Train and instruct people in our care in positive work habits and ensure implementation of safe practices in the workplace
- Monitor and achieve targets in an industrial environment including administrative tasks related to financial budgets, materials and supplier's records and accounts, while maintaining work production schedules
- Liaise with internal staff and external stakeholders and provide analytical and informed contributions to develop and deliver programs and processes.
- Assess people in our care's work performance and skills acquisition, determine their wages contribute to individual management plans and provide advice to assist in classification.
- Participate as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team, providing a quality assurance role to ensure the effective management of industry / service industry areas, with key emphasis on the development, delivery and evaluation of offender management programs and practices.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Appropriate trade qualifications or equivalent relevant trade skills – (resource management / resource maintenance / general land reclamation and improvement experience - desirable)
- Medium rigid truck licence required/or willing to undertake the training (pre-requisite)
- Relevant experience and knowledge of OH&S in an industry setting. (desirable)
- Good Computer Skills Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (expected)
- Relevant experience in vocational education and training environment – (desirable)
- Current Forklift License – (Desirable)
- Completion of prison officer training. (Mandatory)
