‘We're working sometimes with the most vulnerable young people in Victoria. A small shift or a small achievement in their life might seem like a small thing, but it's a very big thing in their life.' – Paul, Youth Justice Community.
This work is demanding and emotionally complex. If one task is done, there will always be something new to do. You will see progress in the young people you work with but change is often gradual rather than dramatic. However, watching the accumulation of small shifts that build over time will inspire you to continue your vital work.
You will not be doing this alone. You will work in a team who genuinely love the work they are do and where support is built into the job. Regular supervision and debriefing will help you balance your priorities and be ready with whatever the day brings you.
This role is a rostered position, and Case Officers work on a rotating roster to provide you with flexibility in your week. The hours of operation Monday to Friday is 6am – 9pm and there are two shifts (morning and afternoon) within these times. Operational hours on weekends are 9am – 9pm and you will be required to work weekends.
These positions are based in either Sunshine (North West Metro Area) and Dandenong (South East Metro Area) and you will work flexibly across different locations within these regions, to support to young people and their families.
Successful applicants will be provided with all necessary training to support performance of the role.
About you
If you can use organisation and communication skills to guide real change in young people and looking for a hands on role, this role is for you.
A relevant qualification in social work, youth work, psychology, human services, criminology or criminal justice is desirable.
You will also need a full driver's licence and maintain a current Working with Children Check.
You should also have:
- the ability to establish rapport with young people regardless of their age, gender, developmental stage or cultural background
- strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing and interacting with stakeholders
- the ability to be flexible and responsive to changes in priorities
- the capacity to stay calm, regulate yourself and keep working after difficult conversations
