Position Details

  • 2 x Fixed Term, full time opportunities (12 Months) based in West Metro or South East Metro
  • Salary range $93,867 - $103,721 plus superannuation
  • Key role as a community liaison between African communities and Youth Justice Community Services

 About Us

The Youth Justice Team provides community-based supervision and a range of case management and support services for young people appearing before, or sentenced by, the Children's Court, Children's Koori Court, and adult criminal courts who have been placed on youth justice supervised orders. The team promotes the personal development of young offenders and contributes to the reduction of crime in the community.

About the Role

This role will further develop and support relationships between Youth Justice Community Services and African communities. Working with case managers to strengthen cultural practice and assist with cultural challenges associated with young offenders from an African background, this role will involve direct work with young people, families and communities. You'll be developing links between agencies and the community, and work in partnership with others to address key issues and there underlying causes for the communities.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the challenges facing young people from an African background, both culturally and in the wider community.
  • Experience or an understanding of working with young people with complex needs at high risk of offending in the community.
  • Demonstrated interest in and an appreciation of a range of different cultures and actively sought to understand and effectively address the issues and views of others.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to build strong relationships, and an understanding of how to motivate others and address conflict.
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills.

A relevant qualification in social work, psychology, human services, criminal justice or criminology and experience in a related field is also desirable.
