About the role

The Principal Legal Counsel will support the Executive Leadership Team at ESTA. The role will act as the sole in-house legal counsel to ESTA by providing strategic decision making and managing risk across the organisation. 

This position will provide expert legal advice on a broad range of complex legal issues to internal stakeholders of all levels. The role will also have particular focus on providing legal advice to project delivery teams responsible for major IT and telecommunication services contractual agreements.

The variety and challenge in this role will come from the following duties. You will: 

  • Provide expert legal advice within commercial law, public law, governance and litigation
  • Create and negotiate commercial agreements for goods and services
  • Identify legal risks and seek potential solutions  
  • Support the Executive Leadership Team by contributing to strategic decision making
  • Monitor legal practices within the organisation and contribute to improvement initiatives
  • Manage outsourcing of external legal services
  • Promote the vision and goals of ESTA internally and externally

 

About you

  • To be considered for this fantastic opportunity, you will have the following:
  • An Australian practising certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law, Victoria (holding or eligible to hold)
  • Demonstrated experience, desirably within Government, providing commercial legal advice at a senior level
  • An ability to formulate and implement solutions to meet business needs
  • Experience in influencing and liaising comfortably with senior levels of an organisation
  • A high level of judgement to be able to manage the resolution of legal issues
  • Excellent written communication skills within legal documentation and complex legal issues
  • An ability to work effectively within tight timeframes and manage multiple projects simultaneously
