About the role:
We are seeking an experienced criminal lawyer to provide high quality legal advice and representation to clients across the Barwon region. You will act as an advocate by conducting complex criminal casework, duty lawyer services and appear as a lawyer at various courts, tribunals and outreach locations. You will provide high quality advice and make recommendations to management on legal and administrative issues that affect the efficient operation of the Geelong regional office and assist Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) programs on a strategic level.

At the Senior Lawyer level you will contribute to the professional development of the in-house legal practice by mentoring and supervising less experienced lawyers and participate in community legal education projects when required.

This presents an exciting opportunity for an experienced criminal lawyer looking to develop their leadership and mentoring skills whilst contributing to the strategic direction of the program focused on improving services provided to clients.

About you:
This is an excellent opportunity to use your in-depth knowledge and advocacy experience in criminal law. The Barwon regional area provides an exciting and varied practice involving criminal law casework, duty lawyering, and community legal education. You will have a high degree of autonomy and responsibility and be able to use your initiative and drive to contribute to the overall strategic objectives of our Criminal Law Program. You will also have a commitment to working collaboratively with others and fostering a supportive team environment.

To be successful in this role you will have a passion for advocating for clients with criminal law issues and also demonstrate a willingness to contribute to the promotion of our organisation and its values.

Employee benefits:
We offer attractive employment benefits including salary packaging (making part of your salary tax-free and increasing take-home pay), flexible working arrangements, family friendly policies and opportunities for professional development. The work is both challenging and rewarding and our staff are supported by experienced and capable managers as well as a range of internal departments and programs committed to staff safety and development. VLA has a friendly and inclusive culture of people working to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged Victorians.
