Senior Technical Officer

The position of Senior Technical Officer is part of the Plant Sciences Branch within the Employment, Investment and Trade Group's Agriculture Victoria Research Division .

The Senior Technical Officer is responsible for conducting high quality field trials as part of the field operations team, which conducts field trials on pulses, oilseeds and winter cereals, the results of which are critical for research across a broad range of projects.  The position oversees field trial operations in Horsham and surrounding areas and is responsible for the establishment, maintenance and harvesting of field based experiments.  Maintenance and operation of farm machinery, along with supervision and training of staff are also important functions of this role.

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate –

  • an understanding of concepts in plant breeding and/or crop production systems plus sound agronomic knowledge in pulses, oilseeds and cereals;
  • the ability to run high quality trials in a range of crops, including the sowing, maintenance and harvesting of trials;
  • capability in the safe and effective use and maintenance of farm machinery and equipment, skills with vehicle based real time kinematic (RTK) auto-steer equipment, as well as hand tools, chemicals and horticultural materials;
  • the ability to work independently as well as part of a team, to operate under minimal supervision and a high level of initiative and effective time management skills;
  • good oral and written communication skills to facilitate effective interaction in a diverse team and with a range of people including growers, colleagues and scientific staff; and
  • computer skills in the Microsoft Office suite.
