  • Salary: $55,439 - $71,194 (Plus Superannuation)

The Team

The position of Technical Assistant forms a part of the Agriculture Victoria Research branch within the Agriculture Victoria group.

The Agriculture Victoria Research Branch represents DJPR's agricultural research and innovation (R&I) function. The Agriculture Research Branch provides a discipline-based science and technology delivery function in the following areas: a) Genomics and Cellular Sciences; b) Microbial Sciences, Pests and Diseases; c) Plant Sciences; d) Plant Production Sciences; e) Animal Production Sciences; and f) Agriculture Resources Sciences.

The Role

Reporting to the Research Scientist, you will provide technical support for research projects within the DairyFeedbase program and other research programs based at the Ellinbank SmartFarm. The appointee will provide technical support to research projects that focus on improving the profitability of pasture based dairy systems and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock systems. The appointee will also contribute to other associated dairy research projects and activities at the Ellinbank SmartFarm including programs to demonstrate all aspects of the SmartFarm.

The key accountabilities of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical support to research projects, including the implementation of protocols, taking measurements, processing samples and undertake analysis of experimental data as required, including contributing information for the preparation of technical reports (using Microsoft Office and other programs).
  • Perform routine and research pasture and animal measurements and husbandry techniques according to standard operating procedures and animal ethics requirements.
  • Operate and maintain state-of-the-art research and farming equipment and technologies in a safe manner as outlined in standard operating procedures.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have knowledge of, or experience in assisting in the conduct of pasture, animal and greenhouse gas mitigation experiments along with knowledge of, or experience in undertaking routine farm practices.  If you can demonstrate ability to collect, manage and maintain data and undertake quality control of experimental data, then this could be the position for you.
