The position of Technical Assistant forms a part of the Agriculture Victoria Research Branch within the Agriculture Victoria Group.

The Agriculture Victoria Research Branch represents DJPR's agricultural research and development function. The Agriculture Research Branch provides a discipline-based science and technology delivery function in the following areas: a) Genomics and Cellular Sciences; b) Microbial Sciences, Pests and Diseases; c) Plant Sciences; d) Plant Production Sciences; e) Animal Production Sciences; and f) Agriculture Resources Sciences.

Agriculture R&D is delivered via an ‘innovation ecosystem' that converges government, industry/agribusiness and academia/knowledge centres into clustered and collaborative networks, with a clear focus on science and technology for productivity and biosecurity outcomes. It delivers a continuity of research and development activities across DJPR's priority areas while also elevating the importance of agricultural R&D in DJPR.

The Technical Assistant will provide technical support to the field, laboratory and glasshouse activities of the field crops pathology research program at Horsham. The field crop pathology team is a leading provider of disease management options solutions for the Australian grains industry and works with national collaborators.

The main key accountabilities of the role are:

  • Provide technical support for seed preparation, planting, establishment and maintenance of crop disease management experiments in the field, glasshouse and laboratory.
  • Sow, maintain and harvest plants in a glasshouse and field
  • Operate agricultural machinery and irrigators in the field.
  • Sample soil and plants from field experiments in an efficient and reliable manner.
  • Assist with the collection, entry and collation of experimental data and records using tablets/computers and assess plants for both growth stage and disease severity.
  • Adopt and apply WH&S policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment and be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.
