Position Details


  • $84,019 – $95,329 (Plus Superannuation)

The Research Scientist will develop methods and tools enabling faster genetic gain in animal and plant industries, with a focus on dairy cattle.  Working in the Computational Biology team of approximately 45 staff and students, the role involves developing new technologies and algorithms to increase genetic gain in traits of importance to the dairy sector, communicating research results, and coaching and mentoring colleagues and PhD students.

The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate –

  • a Bachelor of Science degree or an equivalent science qualification in Biology, Genetics, Agriculture, Animal Science, Computer Science or Bioinformatics;
  • specialist knowledge and experience in animal breeding programs and the application of genomic selection;
  • knowledge and experience of the application of quantitative genetics and statistics;
  • ability to perform complex statistical analyses and to write computer programs;
  • capacity to handle large datasets using Linux/Unix computer platforms;
  • high-level communication skills suitable for a range of stakeholders; and
  • ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team in a scientific environment, and meet tight timelines.

As part of the Machinery of Government changes announced by the Premier of Victoria, on 1 Jan 2019 DEDJTR transitioned into the Department of Transport (DoT) and the Department of Jobs, Precincts & Regions (DJPR).  The position of Research Scientist sits within the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR).  The position is part of the Agriculture Victoria Research Branch's Genomics and Cellular Sciences Unit within the Agriculture Victoria Group.

Agriculture Victoria works with industry and community stakeholders to support the agriculture, food and fibre sector to become more globally competitive, innovative and resilient.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Records Check prior to commencing employment with the Department.
