Position Details

Join us and be part of Victoria's Big Build, working within the award-winning Level Crossing Removal Project. We've already removed some of Victoria's most dangerous level crossings, and we're not stopping any time soon with work to last us until at least 2030. There has never been a better time to get amongst the action!

About the role

Our Planning, Environment and Place team are looking for two experienced Senior Planning and Environment Specialists (SPES), based in Moorabbin and the Melbourne CBD, to join them in the delivery of a broad range of exciting transport projects. You will be focused on statutory approvals, project input and stakeholder management as you join a collaborative, passionate team that cares deeply about environmental issues and getting the best planning outcomes on our projects.

Whilst the two roles are similar in some aspects, there are key differences that we have outlined below. Upon submitting your application, you will be asked to choose your location preference.

Both roles are 3-year fixed term contracts, open to both full-time and part-time hours, paying between $127,467- $170,579 plus superannuation. We work in a hybrid working arrangement, which means some days you will be based in the office (in Moorabbin or the Melbourne CBD) and some from home.

A bit about the SPES position based in the Melbourne CBD:

This role will see you being responsible for providing sound guidance and expertise on all planning and environment matters to project teams, as well as:

  • Managing systems that support project teams to obtain and maintain compliance with relevant State and Commonwealth planning and environmental approvals.
  • Advising on and supporting implementation of planning approval strategies and other processes relating to planning scheme requirements, referrals, heritage permits and consents.
  • Building meaningful working relationships with a range of regulators and stakeholders such as the Department of Transport and Planning, Heritage Victoria, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action.

To be successful in this position you will have extensive experience managing and providing technical advice on planning and environmental issues in a major project context, with knowledge on how governments (local, state) operate including relevant legislation. You consider yourself a subject matter expert, with experience providing planning and environment advice on major projects and a relevant tertiary qualification to match.

A bit about the SPES position based in Moorabbin:

This role is a key leadership position within the Southern Program's Land, Planning and Environment team. You will manage the team responsible for planning and environmental approvals during project delivery. We're looking for someone with a sound technical background but also someone who can impart their knowledge and experience to the team. The role is a fantastic opportunity to combine your technical and leadership skills in a fast-paced and motivating environment.

You will be responsible for providing clear technical advice to the Southern Program project delivery teams as well as:

  • Managing planning and environment team member's deliverables during the delivery and completion phases and managing relationships with both internal and external disciplines.
  • Ensuring all Commonwealth and State planning and environmental approvals are in place and complied with during project delivery, including planning scheme requirements, referrals, heritage permits and consents.
  • Building meaningful working relationships with a range of regulators and stakeholders such as the Department of Transport and Planning, Heritage Victoria, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action.

For this role we would expect you to have specialist skills and experience relevant to the delivery phase of major projects, along with leadership experience. You've led teams in the past, you like to share your knowledge, and you can have a tough conversation where it's needed. Applicants from a variety of backgrounds, including the private sector and local government, are encouraged to apply.

At LXRP we embrace diversity and inclusion. We actively strive to remove barriers and encourage applications from people of any age, or disability, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders, culturally and linguistically diverse or LGBTIQA+. We will make adjustments to our recruitment process to ensure that you are able to participate to the best of your ability.

What next?

To apply – just submit your CV. No need to submit a separate address of the key selection criteria, and no need for a cover letter.

Upon applying you will be asked to answer the following (assessed) questions:

  1. What do you enjoy the most about working in the planning and environment space?
  2. What skills and experience do you have that you feel are transferrable to the role?
  3. What is your location preference?

After assessing your CV and answers to the above questions, the next steps will be a phone screen, followed by an interview that will include a short activity where you can showcase your skills and potential.

Please note: the successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which include national police checks and misconduct screening. Please be advised that it is requirement for all MTIA staff to be compliant with the MTIA COVID-19 Vaccination Policy (the Policy).

The Policy stipulates that, unless an employee is an Excepted Person within the meaning of the Policy, in order to attend an MTIA workplace the employee must hold ‘up-to-date' vaccination status in accordance with ATAGI guidance, which for most includes their primary vaccination course and booster. Should you require further information about the Policy, please have a conversation with our Talent Acquisition team.
