Position Details
Please note: Due to Machinery of Government changes under Section 30 of the Public Administration Act (PAA), effective 1 January 2023, your employment will be with the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action. Corporate Services, including payroll, will be provided by the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions while a process for the formal transfer of staff in impacted areas is implemented.
The Team
The position of Research Scientist forms a part of the Agriculture Victoria Research Branch, Plant Sciences Unit and Plant Molecular Breeding Team. Agriculture Victoria works with industry and community stakeholders to support the agriculture, food and fibre sector to become more globally competitive, innovative and resilient.
The Role
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Research Scientist to work within the Australian Grains Genebank (AGG), which is the national center for plant genetic resources for grain crops. The AGG acquires, quarantines, conserves and distributes plant genetic resources relevant to the Australian grains industry, ensuring it has access to the valuable germplasm needed to sustain national productivity targets into the future.
You will undertake applied research on germplasm and associated data to improve curation management practices, conservation and utilisation of winter cereal crop species within the AGG. You will contribute to the development and management of research programs to import, conserve and evaluate AGG's seed collections, and assist in the development and implementation of genebank Quality Management Systems and Standard Operating Procedures.
About You
You will need to work effectively as part of the AGG team at Horsham under the guidance of the Senior Research Scientist and Leader of the AGG program. You will undertake greenhouse and field work, and work closely with genebank clients, the community, industry stakeholders and international genebanks. You will supervise technical and/or junior research staff.
