The position of Research Scientist – Data Engineer forms as part of the Agriculture Victoria Research branch within the Agriculture Victoria group.

The Agriculture Victoria Research Branch

The Agriculture Victoria Research branch represents DJPR's agricultural research and development function. The Agriculture Research branch provides a discipline-based science and technology delivery function in the following areas: a) Genomics and Cellular Sciences; b) Microbial Sciences, Pests and Diseases; c) Plant Sciences; d) Plant Production Sciences; e) Animal Production Sciences; and f) Agriculture Resources Sciences.

The Role

We are looking for a highly capable data engineer with skills across a broad suite of the data lifecycle and operations. The position will assist in building highly innovative, complex API-based services to support the development and utilisation of a big data in agriculture.

You will support the ongoing development and deployment of cutting-edge open-source tools, including an ecosystem of APIs and microservices, to assist the integration of genomics data in large interdisciplinary collaborative research projects. The work will contribute to transforming the Australian Grains Genebank – the national centre for plant genetic resources for grain crops and a key piece of national infrastructure supporting Australian food security – into a modern bio-digital resource centre.

You will be required to deliver on specific milestones for a collaborative, industry co-funded project and expected

to be familiar with modern data technologies and be adept at designing, implementing, and maintaining interoperable data, storage, processing and retrieval systems. You will have access to in-house high performance computing resources and commercial cloud infrastructure.

About You

The role requires excellent analytical and organisational skills, along with good verbal and written communication skills and a developed ability to learn new skills. You will work as part of a development team and will interact and co-ordinate with a broad multi-disciplinary team of scientists working across a range of research programs in animal and plant genetics and genomics.
