Position Details

Senior Adviser

  • Salary: $113,022 - $136,747 (Plus Superannuation)
  • Fixed-Term to 29 May 2026
  • Usual hours of work: Full time (flexibility may be available)
  • Usual work location: Melbourne CBD (flexibility may be available)

The Role

As a Senior Adviser, you will provide high-level coordination and strategic support to the Executive Director, Training Operations and Assurance branch and the Executive team.

The Senior Adviser supports the branch's achievement of key objectives through the provision of strategic advice, and strong project, program and relationship management skills and experience. The Senior Adviser applies innovative thinking to their tasks, promoting a culture of process improvement leading to better outcomes for the branch, group and external stakeholders.

The Senior Adviser provides a lead role in supporting knowledge management and coordination across the branch and wider group. The Senior Adviser has a keen eye for detail and provides well researched advice in a clear and succinct manner that informs and influences the attitude and behaviour of peers and stakeholders to comply with their responsibilities and obligations.

 Key accountabilities include:

  • Triage the workflow of the executive office by promptly delegating tasks (where possible), mitigating risks, determining a clear course of action and ensuring timelines are met.
  • Knowledge and information management, particularly through coordination and preparation of the branch's briefing, correspondence and reporting requests, including quality assurance and streamlining of feedback.
  • Oversight and coordination of key branch-wide business processes, including business improvements, workforce management and capability building.
  • Liaison with the Deputy Secretary's Office, Minister's Office and other group Senior Advisers, ensuring key messages and priorities are communicated to and acted on by branch.
  • Manage activities associated with the implementation of the business planning framework including performance monitoring of branch business plan.

The Team

The position of the Senior Adviser will work within Training Operations and Assurance branch, which sits within Skills and Employment group.

Skills and Employment (SE) group focuses on enabling Victorians to gain access to skills and employment opportunities and enabling a strong pipeline of workers to meet Victoria's skills needs, now and into the future. 

SE group works in collaboration across government, industry and community to deliver skills-focused solutions that leverage the opportunities in the economy and drive improved workforce outcomes across all levels of the skills and training system. 

SE group oversees the Victorian Vocational Education and Training (VET) system with a specific focus on ensuring the delivery of quality outcomes through TAFEs through the Office of TAFE Coordination and Delivery, informed by our partnership with the Victorian Skills Authority. 

About You

To be successful in this role you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Customer Focus: Identifies and responds to customer requirements; use understanding of the customers' context to tailor services and ensure outcomes are delivered; effectively manages risks to service delivery.
  • Planning and Organising: Establishes systems and procedures to guide work and track progress; identifies processes, tasks and resources required to achieve a goal; recognises actual and potential barriers and finds effective ways to deal with them; sets clearly defined objectives and priorities and operates accordingly, reviewing and adjusting as required.
  • Written Communication: Prepares complex briefs, letters, emails and reports using clear, concise and grammatically correct language; edits written communications to ensure they contain the information necessary to achieve their purpose and meet audience needs; ensures appropriate style and formats are used.
  • Influence and Persuasion: Gains agreement to proposals and ideas; build behind the scenes support for ideas to ensure buy-in and ownership; uses chains of indirect influence to achieve outcomes; involves experts or other third parties to strengthen case.
  • Managing People: Holds self and team accountable to public sector values and agreed performance standards; supports achievement of outcomes by anticipating and resolving issues; establishes and implement actions to increase level of people engagement; creates opportunities for recognising performance.
