Agriculture Victoria Research is seeking to recruit an experienced Research Scientist for a Bioinformatics / Computational biology research position. This fulltime role will require a high level of analytical skills and knowledge, with extensive experience in bioinformatics or computational biology, especially in the analysis of high-throughput DNA sequencing data for metabarcoding and/or metagenomic identification of species. The position will support the research activities defined in the National Grains Diagnostics and Surveillance Initiative (NGDSI) - Grains Biosecurity Mission (GBM) which is co-funded by Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).  

The position will be based at the AgriBio Centre, in Bundoora (Melbourne), in the Invertebrate and Weed Sciences group, which delivers research in integrated pest management, invertebrate diagnostics and surveillance, weed management and biological control of invertebrate pests and weeds. Many of the duties will require initiative and independent work. The applicant will have a good aptitude for working as part of a large multidisciplinary team, conducting a wide variety of work across the Microbial Sciences, Pests and Diseases unit.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline including bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics

This is a fixed term position available for a period of 3 years. The work location for this position is Bundoora with hybrid work arrangements available.
