Senior Policy Officer

  • Salary: $113,002 - $136,747 (Plus Superannuation)

The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Ministerial Coordination and Advice, this position supports the department's governance and ministerial operations. It provides authoritative advice on administrative policy and supports the delivery of ministerial functions, ensuring alignment with departmental obligations, protocols and procedures.

Main accountabilities:

  • Provide authoritative advice to the department on administrative policy and guidelines related to Government and Parliamentary Services business functions.
  • Provide project coordination support to the PAEC Project Manager by managing timelines, communication, overseeing project documentation and administrative project tasks.
  • Coordinate the department's intergovernmental relations responsibilities and maintain effective communication with central agencies.
  • Support business continuity across Government and Parliamentary Services functions by maintaining processes, procedures and assisting with continuity planning during periods of disruption or high demand.

The Team

The position of Senior Policy Officer forms a part of the Strategy, Performance and Governance branch within the Corporate Services group.

The Corporate Services group consists of specialist functions including strategic communications, finance, investment and procurement, performance and governance, legal and legislation, people and culture, information technology and workplace services and emergency management.

About You

The successful candidate will ideally have the following skills and experience:

  • Technical experience: Demonstrated expertise in implementing, interpreting and providing advice on policies, guidelines and protocols, with a proven ability to manage ministerial requests, maintain high documentation standards and provide effective support during ministerial transition periods.
  • Planning and organising: Sets clearly defined objectives and priorities and operate accordingly, reviewing and adjusting as required; identifies processes, tasks and resources required to achieve a goal; establishes systems and procedures to guide work and track progress; recognises actual and potential barriers and finds effective ways to deal with them.
  • Influence and negotiation: Gains agreement to proposals and ideas; builds behind- the- scenes support for ideas to ensure buy-in and ownership; uses chains of indirect influence to achieve outcomes, for example, ‘gets A to show B so B will tell C'; involves experts or other third parties to strengthen a case.
