About the roles:
We have two full time, ongoing roles available:

  • Associate Director, Summary Crime 
  • Associate Director, Indictable Crime 

Each Associate Director (AD) will lead a key program within our Criminal Law directorate, Summary Crime or Indictable Crime, ensuring the delivery of quality legal services to legally aided clients across the state. You will manage high level stakeholder engagement, policy development, strategic litigation, law reform and oversight of a large team of staff – this includes 60x Summary Crime lawyers and support staff (for the AD, Summary Crime role) or 20x Indictable Crime lawyers and support staff (for the AD, Indictable Crime role).

You will develop and implement strategic objectives aligned with VLA's strategic priorities and provide leadership and mentoring to a team that has undergone a restructure to include more resources.

These Associate Director positions are critical roles and present an excellent opportunity for a dynamic and influential leader to contribute to the sustainable, effective and efficient delivery of quality Summary and Indictable crime services throughout the state.

About you:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a principal of a law practice.
  • Entitlement to practise in federal courts and courts exercising federal jurisdiction (entry on the High Court's Register of Practitioners)
  • Leadership and management experience preferably gained within a public or private legal sector.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the practice of criminal law in the summary crime and/or indictable crime jurisdictions.
  • Extensive experience in developing, implementing and evaluating high impact, successful and influential projects and policies.
  • Lived experience working with First Nations Australians, including an understanding of the cultural norms, communication styles and complex issues experienced by Australian First Nations peoples.
