The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking 2 x Prison Supervisor's to provide a critical role at the Metropolitan Remand Centre.

About the Business Unit

Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC) is a maximum-security remand facility based in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Prisoners on remand are alleged offenders who were not bailed when charged with a crime and are awaiting the outcome of their court case.

The Metropolitan Remand Centre is a 954-bed maximum-security facility for unsentenced male offenders located within the West Metropolitan Region, Department of Justice, and Community Safety.

About the Role

Prison Supervisors are responsible for the management of a unit or the delivery of a specific function and may be required to be the officer in charge at the prison. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement and confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate staff.  With highly developed communication and negotiation and problem-solving skills the prison supervisor leads and manages staff to achieve program and service outcomes in a multidisciplinary team and rehabilitative environment

This multifaceted role encompasses human resource management, including Performance Management, coaching, and developing staff, OH&S requirements, E.E.O. legislation responsibilities, staff employment and training requirements and budget monitoring. An important facet of the Prison Supervisor role involves liaison with internal staff and external stakeholders and preparation of analytical and informed contributions to develop and deliver programs and processes.

This position requires direct prisoner contact and may involve weekend and public holiday work, remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Determination.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Leading and managing staff to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff, and visitors.  This includes maintenance of the integrity of both the external and internal security of the facility, appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and monitoring staff for compliance with security and safety procedures.
  • Train supervises and support staff in all aspects of prison operations including prisoner assessment, case management, program and service knowledge and involvement, maintenance of professional boundaries and contribution to prison security management and classification procedures.
  • Deliver performance management and professional development guidance to custodial staff, taking responsibility for supervision and development of allocated team staff.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Effectively use departmental computer systems for basic word processing, email, appointment scheduling, internet, and intranet functions.
  • Good knowledge of OH&S Policy and Procedures.
  • Sound understanding of current Policy and Procedures and statutory requirements.

Qualifications/requirements

  • Completion of Prison Pre-Service Training.
