Position Details

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is one of the world's largest, and most highly regarded community based emergency services organisations. We respond to fire and other emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whilst our firefighters are the cornerstone of CFA services, what goes on behind the scenes is just as important in helping to protect lives and property.

Spatial Intelligence provides highly specialised and professional spatial information and analysis services that support a diverse range of activities, including provision of fire ground maps; predicting impact areas of toxic gas and smoke releases; assessment of operational performance; strategic planning of infrastructure programs and optimising dispatch arrangements. Spatial Intelligence is a functional area of Business Intelligence.  Spatial Intelligence comprises of 4 functional areas including Mapping Support, Technology Management, Data Management and Modelling and Analysis.

The primary purpose of the Spatial Modelling and Analysis Team Leader is to provide authoritative advice, and delivery of, decision support tools based on spatial models and analyses.  This ensures CFA is positioned to integrate the latest spatial science into a range of planning and operational information systems and tools as appropriate.  In achieving this, the position will provide liaison and leadership with other government departments including DEWLP Bushfire Risk Assessment Unit, interstate fire services, AFAC and Bushfire CRC is expected.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent; Post Graduate Qualifications an advantage and/or equivalent workplace experience as a spatial information scientist with extensive experience performing spatial modelling.
  • Able to develop and maintain effective engagement with key stakeholders.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate complex technical matters to a non-technical audience at all levels.
  • Experience leading a team of professionals to deliver highly specialised advice and services.
  • Extensive knowledge of GIS related software such as ESRI ArcGIS Network Analyst, Spatial Analyst, model builder, python, FME and SQL RDBMs such as SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of Victorian digital spatial databases.
  • Understanding of bushfire models and behaviour would be an advantage.
