Position Details

About the Role:

The vegetation management program aims to reduce the risk and severity of bushfires through fuel management and building capacity of volunteers and staff in understanding the use of fire in fire prevention, and improve knowledge of fire behaviour for safe and effective suppression.

CFA members implement planned burns on private land and roadsides, and provide support to Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) in conducting of planned burns on public land. The level of support that CFA can provide to FFMVic planned burning varies across the state. CFA capacity, on

private or public land, is influenced by the availability and skill level of our workforce. Jointly conducted burns provide opportunities to build capacity and capability of CFA members.

The Vegetation Management Support Officer (VMSO) forms a contact point for both agencies, working to receive formal requests for resources from either CFA or FFMVic Burn Planners and matching resource requests, burn locations, tasking and timing with individual staff and volunteers who have expressed interest. The position will work closely with the District Vegetation Management Officer (VMO) in the gathering information required for Burn Plan preparation and will assist the VMO in regional service delivery. On occasion this will include VMO related duties at the request of the VMO.

The successful applicant will have:

• An ability to develop a sound understanding of Planned Burning resource requirements.

• Ability to plan and coordinate the movement of resources on time to correct destination, using knowledge of District Brigade networks, membership, and travel times.

• Ability to compile information required for the development of Burn Plans and assist the District Vegetation Management Officer in the performance of their duties.

• Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills and ability to show strong attention to detail.

• Good problem solving skills, and ability to forge and maintain productive inter-agency relationships.

• Working knowledge of IT, in particular Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word and the ability to maintain database programs.
