Position Details

Ambulance Victoria's mission is to improve the health of our community by delivering innovative, high quality ambulance services and providing exceptional clinical care. The leading edge clinical practice and lifesaving work of Ambulance Victoria's paramedics and volunteers is supported and coordinated by our Operational Communications specialists.

The organisation has been undergoing an exciting transformation since the release of Victoria's Ambulance Action Plan: Improving Services, Saving Lives. This report has been a key input into the organisation's Corporate Plan, which is designed to improve ambulance response to the Victorian community and the health, wellbeing and capability of staff. To support the delivery of outcomes identified in the Corporate Plan, and as part of the ongoing reform agenda to improve the care we provide to the community and the way we support our people, a new organisational structure for our Operations areas is under implementation, with the creation of two senior leadership positions, including the Director, Communications Centres, reporting directly to the Executive Director leading the Operational Communications Division.

About the role

The Director, Communications Centres is responsible for the strategic management, leadership and delivery of AV's state-wide call taking and despatch functions. As an integral part of the division's leadership team the successful candidate will ensure risk management, training and business rules are in place as part of a high performance environment. The Director, Communications Centres will be accountable for continuous improvement and driving change at the Communication Centres in Ballarat and Burwood, as well as managing staff in the new AV Resource Hub in line with established audit, response and clinical standards. People management strengths will be utilised to develop high functioning operational communications teams that ensure resource management is optimal on day of operations and the coordination of resources efficient as part of the emergency response plan and Best Care framework.  

About you

The successful candidate will possess extensive operational management experience and an ability to resolve complex problems in a systems-driven environment. Your academic and technical capacity will ideally be supported by a tertiary qualification in business, management or public administration.  You will also have an understanding of emergency response plans and be familiar with call taking and dispatch systems, in addition to telephone triage systems.

In conjunction with health or emergency services industry experience, we are seeking somebody who is adept at working at a senior level in complex organisations with diverse business requirements.  As a strong enterprise manager, you will be able to demonstrate your success in process improvement and will bring proven leadership and coaching skills to the position. Your ability to build working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders will support you in the role as you develop strategic networks and engage with community organisations.
