Position Details

Ambulance Victoria's mission is to improve the health of our community by delivering innovative, high quality ambulance services and providing exceptional clinical care. The leading edge clinical practice and lifesaving work of Ambulance Victoria's paramedics and volunteers is supported and coordinated by our Operational Communications specialists and Referral Service Triage Practitioners.

The organisation has been undergoing an exciting transformation since the release of Victoria's Ambulance Action Plan: Improving Services, Saving Lives. This report has been a key input into the organisation's Corporate Plan, which is designed to improve ambulance response to the Victorian community and the health, wellbeing and capability of staff. To support the delivery of outcomes identified in the Corporate Plan, and as part of the ongoing reform agenda to improve the care we provide to the community and the way we support our people, a new organisational structure for our Operations areas is under implementation, with the creation of two senior leadership positions, including the Director, Operational Triage Services, reporting directly to the Executive Director leading the Operational Communications Division.

About the role

The Director, Operational Triage Services is responsible for the strategic management, leadership and development of AV's state-wide Referral Services in line with Ambulance Victoria's Best Care framework. The successful candidate will lead an inclusive high-performing patient-centred team whilst ensuring audit, clinical and performance standards are met. Working closely with the Director, Communications Centres you will support AV's Vision of providing outstanding emergency healthcare every time, through ensuring optimal performance.

The role will lead the development and implementation of the Referral Service improvement plan, including managing effective integration with broader operational communications and organisational processes. Leading a diverse group of practitioners which includes paramedics and nurses, as well as ensuring effective contracted services, you will need to contemporise service delivery including supporting Team Leaders to mentor Referral Service staff in order to create a climate of service excellence. The ability to manage future integration and expansion of Ambulance Victoria's alternative service provision is at the forefront of the role's aims, in addition to delivering high-performance outcomes in a developing service delivery environment. 

About you

The successful candidate will bring significant operational leadership, preferably from a patient-facing environment.  Your extensive people management capability will ideally be supported by a tertiary qualification in business, management or public administration.  You will also need an understanding of telephone triage services, as well as call taking and dispatch systems.

In conjunction with health or emergency services industry experience, we are seeking somebody who is adept at working at a senior level in complex organisations with diverse business requirements.  You will be able to demonstrate your success in process improvement and will bring proven leadership and coaching skills. Your ability to build working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders will support you in the role as you develop strategic networks and engage with community organisations.
