Position Details

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is one of the world's largest, and most highly regarded community based emergency services organisations. We respond to fire and other emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whilst our firefighters are the cornerstone of CFA services, what goes on behind the scenes is just as important in helping to protect lives and property.

About the Role:

The Fire Safety Officer role provides a unique development opportunity for someone experienced in town planning and/or building design. This opportunity will allow the successful applicant to enhance their understanding of the planning and/or building sector by being part CFA's service delivery team. By understanding CFA's regulatory role in the town planning and building systems the successful applicant will expand their understanding of both bushfire and structural fire behaviour.

The Fire Safety Officer has an important part in building the community's resilience to both bushfire and structure fire by working to ensure development and buildings appropriately designed to respond to the risk of fire.

In order to undertake this role, CFA delegates to the Fire Safety Officer responsibilities under various Acts and Regulations including the CFA Act, the Planning and Environment Act the Subdivision Act; and the Building Act and Building Regulations.

The successful applicant will have:

Qualifications and Experience                                          

  1. Demonstrated industry experience or equivalent tertiary qualifications would be an advantage.
  2. Proven structural environment experience with particular emphasis in the fire safety area.
  3. Experience and/or understanding of operational firefighting would be an advantage.

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Demonstrated high level knowledge of and experience in, the application of the building and planning legislation and its relevance to CFA.
  2. An understanding of emergency management planning and operational response requirements.
  3. An understanding of hazardous materials, bushfire and structural fire behaviour.
  4. Well-developed interpersonal skills, including negotiation skills and the ability to influence a wide range of internal and external stakeholder relationships across local Government, industry and communities.
  5. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to observe, investigate and make decisions based on sound risk assessment and judgement.
  7. Demonstrated ability to organise and manage a diverse workload and competing timeframes.
