Position Details

Traditional Owner Regional Engagement Officers VPS4 x 4 positions

Aboriginal Victoria is recuiting four new Traditional Owner Regional Engagement Officers to lead engagement with Victorian Traditional Owners without formal recognition in each of the following regions:

  • mid north west Victoria
  • central north west Victoria
  • north east Victoria
  • far east Gippsland,

as part of the Traditional Owner Nation-building Support Package.

The Traditional Owner Regional Engagement Officers will:

  • build and maintain relationships with and between Traditional Owners in their region and support Traditional Owners to come together, to plan and set their own priorities, and to build strong foundations for the future.
  • support Traditional Owners knowledge and involvement in nation-building (foundational, formal recognition and treaty readiness) activities and formal recognition and treaty processes
  • coordinate engagement between Traditional Owners and nation-building service providers including Traditional Owner Programs in Aboriginal Victoria, the Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations and First Nations Legal & Research Services to facilitate foundational, formal recognition and treaty readiness activities.

These roles require experience engaging or working with Aboriginal communities and an understanding of self-determination approaches. An ability to plan and organise, build positive relationships, communicate effectively and take initiative is essential in this role. An understanding of formal recognition processes and healing-informed practice will be highly regarded.

The Regional Engagement Officers will work collaboratively with the Traditional Owner Nation-building Support Services Partnership (comprised of the Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporation, First Nations Legal & Research Services, and Aboriginal Victoria's Traditional Owner Programs) and a small team of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff dedicated to working with Victorian Traditional Owners to support self-determination, formal recognition and treaty.

This is a designated position established as a special measure under section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply for this position.
