Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) is the Victorian Government's insurer and risk adviser, covering the people and projects that help Victorians thrive. We're an agency in the Department of Treasury and Finance portfolio established under the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority Act, and report to the Assistant Treasurer.

We provide insurance and risk advice to government departments and agencies, with more than 4,600 clients ranging from small community service organisations to public hospitals, schools, and core service providers. As a result, we have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Machine Learning Engineer to be part of a state-wide eco-system to identify key risks to the state and find ways to proactively identify and prevent/reduce harm caused to all Victorians.

In this role you will build and develop our machine learning technologies and infrastructure, working in Python to establish our data pipelines to improve reliability and efficiency throughout the organisation.

Your role reports to the Data Platform Manager in the Insurance Services Division.

How You'll make an impact

  • Build the framework for Machine Learning and Python function workflows.
  • Model evaluation and version control for Python modelling experiments.
  • Expand, optimise, and support our data pipeline architecture and recommend ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality in our data pipelines by applying DataOps principles.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy and maintain highly scalable robust data management solutions hosted in-cloud environments.
  • Apply best practice solution development and implementation methods including Continuous Integration/Deployment, development and testing standards and DevOps patterns.
  • Build and maintain the CI/CD pipeline that deploys the machine learning and Python infrastructure.
  • Support the day-to-day operation of data platform including responding to service requests, debugging and remediating data pipeline issues, conducting root-cause analysis and incident reviews.
  • Participate in agile rituals including daily stand-ups, planning, backlog management, demos, and retrospectives.

Who you work with

  • Key stakeholders within Insights & Analytics, specifically the Data Platform team, to enhance the core Python data infrastructure and architecture, and the Data Science team, to productionise analytical models and functions (mainly in Python).
  • Technology team to ensure the resources and services utilised by the data platform are properly governed and compliant with VMIA standards.

About you

  • 3-5 years' Python coding experience in a data or software development setting.
  • 1-3 years' AI & Machine Learning coding experience using Python in a data or software development setting.
  • Solid experience in utilising SQL (PostgreSQL, SnowSQL) to extract, transform and load (ETL) data into data warehouse.
  • Experience in monitoring, automating and uplifting data warehouse outcomes using DevOps methodologies and toolsets, including GIT.
  • Experience working with Windows and Linux operating systems, including in Docker.
  • Excellent analytical skills and proven track record solving difficult problems.
  • Experience in Agile tools such as the Atlassian Suite (Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket).
  • Continuous Integration/Delivery tools such as Azure Devops, Bitbucket, Bitbucket Pipelines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a flair for creating innovative solutions.
  • You are keen to work in a highly collaborative and agile environment.
  • A qualification in computer science, analytics, or related field
