Position Details

We are seeking an experienced Senior Lawyer who supports the Practitioner Discipline Unit to deliver the Victorian Building Authority's (VBA) core disciplinary function. The role will provide solicitor advocacy services across disciplinary hearings and case managing complex legal activity relating to the conduct, performance and practising ability of building and plumbing practitioners regulated under the Building Act 1993.

The Senior Lawyer is responsible for applying principles of procedural fairness, administrative law, legislative interpretation, corporate governance and probity to undertake a detailed review of practitioner submissions, examining evidence and assess competing arguments against legislation to make sound recommendations.

Key Selection Criteria

To be successful in this position, you will need to demonstrate:

  • Admission or eligibility for admission to the legal profession in an Australian jurisdiction (that is, an Australian lawyer) is required;
  • Proven experience working within a disciplinary or prosecutorial setting, applying principles of procedural fairness and impartial decision making to disciplinary or investigative processes within a Regulatory regime or law enforcement environment;
  • Sound working knowledge of administrative law, the law of evidence and the principles and procedures that apply to practitioner discipline and best-practice case management strategies;
  • Excellent conceptual, analytical and systematic thinking skills, with demonstrated ability to interpret and apply legislation, examine evidence and make sound recommendations;
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders; and
  • Proven case management, ability to multi-task and prioritise workloads.

Salary Details

Base salary in the Grade 5 range of $96,942 - $117,293 per annum (plus 9.5% super) will be negotiated with the successful candidate, depending on skills and experience.
