Position Details
The Organisation
The Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner (VLSB+C) is the independent regulator of the legal profession in Victoria. It licenses lawyers and oversees service standards and conduct. This includes handling complaints about lawyers, investigating poor conduct and overseeing management of trust accounts.
VLSB+C is a vibrant, innovative organisation. Its staff enjoy exceptional leadership and a sense of purpose to assist the community and the legal profession.
The Role
The General Counsel plays a key role in ensuring that VLSB+C meets its obligations under relevant legislation and quality assurance standards. You assist the Commissioner, the ELT and staff on a diverse range of legal issues including contract negotiation and drafting, administrative law advice, responses to litigation, insurance, workplace relations, IP, FoI and delegations matters and management of external legal advisors.
Reporting to the ED Shared Services and Digital Transformation, you sit within a nimble, skilled team and manage direct reports in legal, procurement and quality assurance. You act as a welcome sounding board to others, contributing to organisation-wide opportunities for improvement.
The Ideal Candidate
Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple legal tasks, to lead a small team and manage a diverse portfolio are important attributes. You're a ‘can do' lawyer keen to find a way through. You are values-driven, commercially astute and a clear, direct communicator.
A lawyer with at least 10 years' experience will relish this opportunity to apply legal, organisational and leadership skills acquired in inhouse or government practice to establish the General Counsel function.
You may currently sit at a senior level within an existing legal team and you're keen to rise to a General Counsel role. A Senior Associate or Special Counsel who can demonstrate extensive inhouse experience (eg through secondments) will also be considered.
The Reward
The role sits at SES-1 level.
