About the role:
Part of the Criminal Law Program, the Summary Crime sub program is Victoria Legal Aid's (VLA) largest state wide service that has recently undergone a restructure designed to deliver on VLA's independent Summary Crime Program Evaluation. The Summary Crime team delivers quality legal services to the most socially and economically disadvantaged members of the community.

Reporting to the Program Manager, you will provide high quality leadership and management to the Melbourne based Summary Crime team which delivers duty law services in the Melbourne and Heidelberg Magistrates' Courts. You will lead and supervise a diverse team of lawyers undertaking legal work with a focus on promoting strong outcomes for clients. You will provide expert legal advice, and occasionally be required to conduct high-level casework and appear to defend clients in complex summary crime matters alongside your management duties

This role provides an exceptional opportunity for an experienced Managing Lawyer to be part of a progressive and dynamic organisation committed to delivering effective legal services in this area.

About you:
You are an engaged leader with demonstrated people management and leadership capabilities including proven experience in developing, managing and motivating a team. You will be a senior lawyer with substantial practicing experience in criminal law and a good understanding of current trends, issues and challenges impacting the justice system and needs of vulnerable clients.

Crucial to your success in this role will be your highly developed communication, stakeholder management and negotiation skills in fostering collaborative relationships to enable effective service delivery across the Melbourne and Heidelberg Magistrates' courts. You will also demonstrate a commitment to our vision and values in managing the Summary crime team and the effective delivery of services.

About Victoria Legal Aid:
Our vision is for a fair and just society where rights and responsibilities are upheld.
