About us

The Department of Treasury and Finance provides economic, financial and resource management advice to help the Victorian Government deliver its policies. We strive for excellence in financial and economic management to improve the lives of all Victorians.

Regulation Group

Regulation Group aims to support the Victorian Government in growing employment, material living standards and economic activity. We do this by supporting the Government's agenda to boost Victoria's productivity and providing advice including on improving how government agencies regulate, risk and insurance policy, and local government. We also provide strategic advice, based on Pricing for Value Guidelines, to support policy development on fees related to government services, including regulatory fees.

Regulatory Reform Team

The regulatory reform team delivers reform that makes it easier to do business and supports economic development, business investment and innovation, while improving community safety, health and wellbeing, and consumer and environmental outcomes. Some of the team's core functions include:

  • Consulting broadly across government and industry to implement a Whole of Victorian Government regulatory reform strategy and action plans
  • Providing advice to Government on matters relating to regulatory reform and local council policy
  • Working with other departments, agencies, regulators, and local councils to lead, coordinate and support the delivery regulatory reform initiatives
  • Managing the Business Acceleration Fund to support initiatives that boost Victoria's productivity
  • Support implementation work of several initiatives under the Economic Growth Statement

About the role

This role will be ideal for someone who is passionate about policy reform and implementing practical changes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Victoria's regulatory system. In this role you will assist in the delivery of a major Victorian regulatory reform program, support delivery of an Economic Growth Statement initiative, and engage with regulators and regulatory policy areas across the Victorian Government and local councils.

The role offers the opportunity to identify areas for further regulatory reform that support Victoria's economic and productivity growth. The position may also assist in delivering other work priorities as business needs require.

Critical thinking, the ability to absorb information quickly and provide succinct and accurate advice to managers and executives, communicate effectively with government and external stakeholders and support management of projects are key to success in this role. The position works within a high performing team that delivers a challenging work program on behalf of the Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer. The position reports to the Senior Economist, Regulatory Reform.

About you

We are seeking applications from candidates with demonstrable experience in:

  • Use analytical skills and public policy and/or economic expertise to help Government deliver on its policy objectives. 
  • Use project management and policy skills to support the delivery of Victoria's regulatory reform agenda to improve Victoria's productivity
  • Support consultation across government and industry
  • Prepare timely, accurate and accessible advice on economic and policy issues for senior management and government. 
  • Identify economic challenges facing Victoria and contribute to practical solutions. 
  • Work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Participate in planning and decision-making in the team. 
  • Deliver timely work across multiple priorities and responsibilities. 

Experience and qualifications

Tertiary qualifications in economics, commerce, public policy or a related field are an advantage, but not essential.
