Position Details

About the role: 

The Team Leader, Occupational Health and Safety role sits within the Occupational Health and Safety team providing leadership and people management for team members and supporting capability development and a positive safety culture.

In addition to providing operational health and safety advice and support to the department, the team is responsible for developing and implementing a fit for purpose health and safety management system and ensuring that legislative and departmental health and safety compliance requirements are met.

A key focus of the role is the identification and control of operational health and safety hazards and risks through management of the department's online incident reporting system, facilitation of psychosocial risk assessments to support implementation of the psychological health regulations, and the development of initiatives that enable effective risk management across prevention, early intervention and response.

About you:

We're looking for someone who can:

  • Provide leadership and expert advice on matters arising in relation to occupational health and safety legislation, compliance codes and best practice to enhance staff health and safety outcomes.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of health and safety management system (HSMS) content to support the department to manage operational and workplace health and safety risks.
  • Contribute to the development of, and lead initiatives and processes to support effective prevention, risk management practices and monitor and evaluate these initiatives and processes.
  • Manage the department's online hazard and incident reporting system and provide appropriate risk management advice and support to manage operational risks including conducting inspections and investigations where required.
  • Contribute to the development of strategic implementation plans, audits and training to monitor effectiveness of safety systems in protecting employee health and safety including incorporation of communication channels to identify and share better practice and support key health, safety and wellbeing processes and messaging.
  • Facilitate and support consultation and health and safety representation mechanisms and processes for workplace health, safety and wellbeing matters to drive continuous improvement and innovation.

Required Qualifications / Specialist Expertise:

  • A qualification in occupational health and safety is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, relevant legislation, regulations and standards would be expected.
  • Demonstrated high level understanding of and expertise in the design and implementation of OHS systems and processes preferably within a large and complex employer.
  • Experience in complex work health and occupational health and safety matters would also be advantageous for this role.
  • Demonstrated people management skills and experience
