About the opportunity

The Senior Solicitor – Regulatory plays a critical role in safeguarding Victoria's energy safety system by providing authoritative, practical and high‑quality legal advice to Energy Safe Victoria, and leading high‑impact regulatory and compliance initiatives under the direction of the Legal Manager – Regulatory and Corporate within the Legal and Procurement Department.

You will contribute by:

  • Deliver authoritative, practical legal advice on energy safety regulation, compliance and administrative decision‑making.
  • Draft and review regulatory and coercive instruments, including notices and directions.
  • Lead and support significant regulatory and compliance projects, including implementation of new legislative powers and governance frameworks.
  • Provide design assurance and legal oversight across regulatory initiatives, including reviewing complex matters and vendor advice.
  • Manage or support administrative law reviews and litigation, including matters before VCAT.
  • Brief and advise senior leaders, the Executive and the Commission on high‑risk and sensitive legal issues.
  • Engage with external Counsel, law firms, regulators and industry stakeholders.
  • Contribute to organisational capability by developing guidance, delivering training, and mentoring junior legal staff.

To be successful, you'll have: 

  • Admission as an Australian Lawyer and eligibility to hold a Victorian Practising Certificate.
  • Substantial post‑admission experience, gained in‑house and/or in private practice.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on complex regulatory, compliance and administrative law matters, ideally within a regulated environment.
  • Strong judgement and the ability to provide clear, defensible advice under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience briefing senior and executive stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead projects, manage competing priorities and work effectively with limited supervision.
  • Well‑developed stakeholder management skills, including experience working with external Counsel and agencies.
  • A genuine interest in mentoring and supporting junior staff and contributing to a collaborative team culture.
