What you will be doing

Reporting directly to the Lead Investigator, the Investigator undertakes investigations into potential breaches of electoral law, supporting the VEC's compliance and enforcement activities. The role involves gathering and analysing evidence, preparing briefs and reports, and contributing to enforcement actions under the Electoral Act 2002. Working under guidance, the position applies legal and policy frameworks to complex matters, including financial investigations, and supports compliance programs that promote adherence to electoral obligations and safeguard electoral integrity.

This role will be responsible for:

  • Conducting investigations into serious, complex and sensitive breaches of the Electoral Act 2002, including intricate financial matters
  • Preparing briefs, reports, correspondence, and recommendations on complex issues
  • Analysing, interpreting and applying complex legal and policy issues whilst ensuring compliance with legal requirements
  • Managing competing priorities that involve inflexible timelines whilst working autonomously

What you will bring to the role

  • Investigations experience in a law enforcement, legal, compliance, financial and/or regulatory discipline is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated high analytical skills, with experience in the interpretation and analysing financial statements a benefit
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare briefs of evidence, reports and recommendations on complex issues
  • Ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced business environment, particularly during peak election periods
  • A strong commitment to self-development and willingness to learn
  • Commitment to the VEC's core values
