Position Details

The Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation (MAP Co) is the State Government agency responsible for overseeing the delivery of the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation and provides governance and an operational structure to one of Melbourne's most iconic cultural spaces: Fed Square.

MAP Co leads the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation, Australia's largest ever cultural infrastructure project, delivering The Fox: NGV Contemporary and the major rejuvenation of Arts Centre Melbourne (ACM), joined together by 18,000sqm of green public space.

It also takes on the management and operations of Fed Square and is responsible for connecting a single continuous art, civic, and cultural precinct stretching from Fed Square through Southbank.

Once the transformation is complete, MAP Co will also manage and activate Laak Boorndap, the 18,000 urban garden that will connect the Melbourne Arts Precinct in a seamless and immersive cultural experience.

Fed Square is the gateway to the art precinct – and as Melbourne's public square it is the civic, cultural and community heart of the city. It home to four of Victoria's major cultural institutions: ACMI – Australia's Museum of Screen Culture, the Koorie Heritage Trust (KHT), Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia along with an array of restaurants and cafes. Located opposite the iconic Flinders St Station, it is Melbourne's premier meeting place, tourist destination and event venue for thousands of free events every year.

 About the Role 

The role of the MAP Co Corporate Communications team is to support the positive positioning of the Fed Square, MAPT and the Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation as a leader in the broader Melbourne Arts Precinct.  

The role of the Media and Communications Manager is to drive positive awareness and positioning of MAP Co, Fed Square and MAPT through pro-active and re-active media and strategic communications activities.  

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Strategic Communications 

  • Develop, manage, and deliver the media and communications strategy for MAP Co that drives positive awareness of Map Co, Fed Square and MAPT 
  • Lead effective communications campaigns and initiatives that promote MAP Co, Fed Square and MAPT 
  • Crisis communications and reputational management for MAP Co including identifying and preparing for potential communications risks to MAP Co, Fed Square and MAPT 
  • Manage and resolve complex communications issues that could pose significant reputational risk to the organisation and relationships with key stakeholders  

Leadership 

  • This role has the responsibility of people management of one direct report, the Media and Communications Advisor.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, strategic decision making and wider business goals  
  • Represent and amplify the media and communications function internally, with external peers and stakeholders 
  • Provide expert counsel in area of expertise to senior leaders and stakeholders 
  • Manage external PR agency 

Stakeholder Management 

  • High level relationship management with stakeholders including State Government, local council, and tourism bodies 
  • Contribute to and amplify strategic partnerships for the business including major events, tenancies, with arts, sports and government organisations, media, influencers and talent  

Media Management 

  • Manage media strategy to ensure positive positioning of MAP Co, MAPT and Fed Square 
  • Lead the development and delivery of communication materials including Ministerial briefs, media releases, fact sheets, Q&A's, briefing and speaking notes 
  • Oversee media reporting across campaigns and coverage 

Key Selection Criteria

  • Ability to think strategically and develop high level communications strategy  
  • Good understanding of the local and national media and communication landscape. 
  • Strong relationships with local and national media and demonstrated experience in generating earned editorial  
  • Experience in dealing with Government relations including preparation of Ministerial media briefs, key messages, and Q&A.   
  • Exposure and experience in crisis communications  
  • Experience in planning and delivering VIP, media events and press conferences.   
  • Experience in delivering strategic communications advice and counsel to senior leaders and high-profile stakeholders  
  • Ability to evaluate, demonstrate and articulate achievements within media and communications that contribute to corporate goals  
  • An exceptional communicator with a proven ability to write, identify and articulate newsworthy angles/stories and adapt communications effectively to different audiences   
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, customer visitor centric environment with significant stakeholder impact.  

 Desired Experience/Qualifications: 

  • Degree in Media, Communications and/or Journalism desirable.
