About the Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) service:
The IMHA program is a non-legal advocacy service that supports the objectives of the Mental Health Act 2014 (Vic). It is a serious step for people to be detained and to receive mental health treatment against their will. It is vital that people subject to compulsory treatment have a say about their treatment, care and recovery, are supported to express their treatment preferences, make decisions, and have their wishes considered, respected and where possible, followed. The service is statewide, and we have four teams based in VLA offices in Melbourne, Bendigo, Dandenong and Geelong. Advocates provide services to all Designated Mental Health Services in Victoria. IMHA has a phone line staffed by advocates and visit all mental health inpatient units.

About the role:
You will work with mental health consumers to provide information about their rights and the mental health system, assist them to express their views and preferences, and support them to make decisions and participate in decision-making relating to their assessment, treatment, and recovery. You will assist consumers to self-advocate, and where necessary you will make referrals to other support services.

You will contribute to the health and wellbeing of your team, and to the continuous improvement of service policies, procedures and guidelines. You will work to maintain a consumer-focused approach to program delivery through positive engagement with consumers, consumer organisations and other stakeholders. You will also deliver education sessions to a diverse range of stakeholders regarding IMHA, supported decision making and advocacy.

The role is based in Dandenong and will cover the South Eastern region.

About you:
You will have significant experience working with consumers and a deep understanding of the challenges impacting Victorians when accessing mental health support services. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate with people across all levels of the organisation and with external stakeholders.

Employee benefits:
We offer attractive employment benefits including salary packaging (making part of your salary tax-free and increasing take-home pay), flexible working arrangements, family friendly policies and opportunities for professional development. The work is both challenging and rewarding and our staff are supported by experienced and capable managers as well as a range of internal departments and programs committed to staff safety and development. VLA has a friendly and inclusive culture of people working to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged Victorians.

How to apply:
Please submit a current resume and a document addressing the key selection criteria (KSC). You must address the KSC to be considered for this role.
