Occupational Health and Safety Consultant

These two positions support managers and employees in understanding and complying with Occupational Health and Safety legislative requirements and Victoria Police OH&S governance.

The primary focus for the OH&S Consultants is to provide their professional knowledge and expertise to the frontline members, Health and Safety Representative’s (HSRs), OH&S Committees, projects, specialist committees and department heads; to ensure we continue building on safety behaviours and risk competence.

Reporting to the OH&S Operations manager, you will be critical in driving Health and Safety across Victoria Police. Your ability to manage relationships, communicate strongly and impart OH&S knowledge will give you the skills required to mentor front line workers and work unit managers to help them manage health and safety in their workplace.

Position Details

You will be expected to provide input into the continuous improvement of Health and Safety both locally and strategically within Victoria Police. This will be achieved by using your innovative and creative thinking skills and exploring new and emerging ways of how we can implement safety differently.

Your duties will include:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategies, policy & procedures, guidance material and training documentation to support achievement of organisational goals to improve Health and Safety performance, maintain employee wellbeing and ensure legislative compliance.
  • Project manage, as directed, monitor and review strategies to protect and enhance the occupational health safety and well-being of employees.
  • Provide high quality advice through a coaching model to all managers and employees on ways to improve health, safety and wellbeing performance through implementation of the Victoria Police Safe-T-Works Management System, and corporate policies. This will require you to travel to various Victoria Police locations. A Victorian Driver's Licence is highly desirable.
  • Provide support and guidance to Regions Commands and Departments in the development of Strategic Health and Safety Planning that aligns to both organisational goals and specific work area needs identified through data trend analysis, audit findings and hazard inspections.
  • Assist to facilitate the implementation of sound and systematic consultative mechanisms to ensure timely and appropriate consultation with employees and key stakeholders as per the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Assist in the implementation, monitoring and review of targeted special projects focussing on the elimination or minimisation of occupational health and safety hazards and risks within Victoria Police workplaces.
  • Provide OH&S advice to the Victoria Police State Safety Capability Advisor during planned and unplanned events as part of the State Police Operations Centre.
  • Confidently represent the organisation and provide high level advice, leadership and assistance to stakeholders, including Victoria Police, Worksafe, the authorised Agent and any other key stakeholders.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • A degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • The successful candidate will be required to work from the Victoria Police Centre, Melbourne CBD. However, there may be a requirement to travel to remote Victoria Police locations.
  • The successful applicant may be required to undergo National Security Vetting, achieve and maintain a security classification as determined by the Department Head.  To achieve this, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
  • Two (2) full time, ongoing positions available
