About the role:
This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain experience working as a Police Lawyer within Victoria Police. Victoria Police's Legal Services Department is enhancing its advocacy response in an effort to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria.

Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with a team of enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated Police Lawyers to prosecute a range of complex family violence intervention order matters across multiple court jurisdictions. As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to handle busy court lists and to manage competing priorities effectively. This role offers an opportunity to tailor your skills to an array of matters that vary in complexity.

Your duties will include:

  • Appearing as an advocate, caseload management and providing legal advice/information to a range of clients in the areas of family violence, criminal prosecutions, civil law, and other areas as directed.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships within Victoria Police.  
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders across agencies to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.
  • Regularly attending and appearing in the Magistrates' Court, Children's Court, therapeutic courts and as directed appearing in County Court Appeal matters.  
  • Managing cases and the prosecution of family violence intervention orders, criminal related matters, confiscations and proceeds of crime applications, firearms applications and licensing issues matters on behalf of Victoria Police.  
  • Preparing court lists in advance of hearing dates, attending court to interview affected family members, affected persons (victims), respondents and witnesses.
  • Liaising with legal representatives and court staff.  
  • Providing support and assistance to Senior and Supervising Lawyers in the management of more complex cases dealt with at the County Court and other jurisdictions.  You will also be required to provide professional guidance to Legal Support Officers as directed by your senior managers. 

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer.
  • Ability to work in a team and in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • A high level of resilience and emotional intelligence.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1), full time, fixed term, until 22/05/2020 position available
  • The location of the advertised position is Broadmeadows Prosecutions Unit.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • This position may require you to work outside normal hours.
  • While the initial work location for this position is the Broadmeadows Prosecutions Unit, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required to undertake varied work within other locations of the Legal Services Department. This supports the Department's commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
