The Licensing and Regulation Division (LRD) lawyers work on a range of complex matters, based within the Civil Law Division of the Legal Services Department of Victoria Police.

This department is enhancing its advocacy response in an effort to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria. Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated advocates to prosecute a range of civil applications, primarily, firearms, private security and controlled weapons matters in the Firearms Appeals Committee, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal as well as the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria.

Position Details

As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to manage numerous files across a range of jurisdictions, busy court lists and competing priorities effectively whilst coaching, mentoring and developing junior lawyers.

The role offers an opportunity to tailor your skill to an array of matters that vary in complexity. You will be expected to perform caseload management and offer legal advice to the LRD. You will also be required to develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the expansive Victoria Police workforce as well as working with external stakeholders across agencies as part of a broad network to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.

Your duties will include:

  • Liaising with internal stakeholders to provide legal advice and legal representation as well as external stakeholders to exercise proper caseload management.
  • Preparing matters for hearing before the Firearms Appeals Committee, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal as well as the Magistrates' Court of Victoria.
  • Appearing on behalf of the Chief Commissioner of Police and the LRD before the Firearms Appeals Committee, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal as well as the Magistrates' Court of Victoria.
  • Instructing Counsel, where required, in matters listed in superior Courts including the Supreme Court of Victoria.
  • Providing a legal advisory service to other Victoria Police Divisions in relation to firearms, private security and controlled weapons and providing information and training, where required.

As the successful applicant, you will have:                  

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (unrestricted practising certificate).
  • High level understanding and experience as a court advocate.
  • Ability to work in a team and supervise restricted legal practitioners, in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence.
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring and developing junior lawyers
  • A current and valid Drivers' Licence is highly desirable.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • The position is located at the Victoria Police Centre, 637 Flinders Street, Docklands.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or Visa.
  • Shift and weekend work may be required as determined by Victoria Police operational requirements will be paid in accordance with the Victoria Police Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement 2016.
