Position Details

About the role:
An exciting new opportunity for a Senior Police Lawyer has arisen in the Commercial Law unit of the Legal Services Department, comprising of a broader team of in-house lawyers.

The Commercial Law Unit is responsible for drafting, developing and settling complex commercial documentation and provides concise, written and verbal advice on a range of commercial and contract matters, including associated policies.

As a Senior Police Lawyer and part of a small team, you will be required to work both autonomously and under limited supervision.  You will have initiative to propose practical solutions to internal staff and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. You will be required to have strong contract and negotiation skills to provide internal advice and be able to represent Victoria Police's interests to a variety of external stakeholders, including Government agencies and private enterprise.

Your duties will include:

  • Drafting contracts, deeds, memoranda of understanding and all other forms of agreement involving legal input.
  • Reviewing all written engagements with third parties to protect Victoria Police's interests.
  • Providing legal advice on all Victoria Police procurements, including Expressions of Interest, Requests for Quote and tenders.
  • Providing written and verbal advice on commercial issues arising in the course of activities.
  • Instructing, monitoring and overseeing the engagement of external legal providers (including the Victorian Government Solicitor's Officer) on various matters where independence is required.
  • Advising on contract disputes and their settlement.
  • Advising on legal risk and compliance issues.
  • Assisting Victoria Police staff to negotiate legal aspects of contracts or with tenderers' commercial or legal advisors.
  • Providing concise verbal and written advice on Victoria Police associated policies.


As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Proven ability to provide authoritative legal advice, illustrating professional leadership on complex matters.
  • Strong negotiation skills, including skills to resolve problems and contract disputes.
  • Strong knowledge of contract law.
  • Highly developed conceptual, analytical, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • An ability to deliver service excellence.


Requirements and relevant information:

  • An Australian lawyer holding or eligible to hold an Australian practising certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria) with 1 – 4 years post admission experience.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • Shift and weekend work (if required) will be determined by Victoria Police operational requirements and be paid in accordance with the current Victoria Police Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement.
  • Non Victorian Public Servants applicants will be subject to a probation period of three months.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing legal advice on complex contracts and commercial issues under limited direction.
  • Success in delivering practical tools for the efficient support of an organisation's contracts and procurement function will be considered favourably.
