Position Details

About the role:
In response to the recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Family Violence and the resources provided to Victoria Police in the Community Safety Statement to improve responses to family violence, Legal Services Department are continuing their Victorian Public Servant (VPS) recruitment drive for Police lawyers to support this critical work across the state. You will establish strong linkages with all key stakeholders including staff from Magistrates' Court Victoria, Victoria Legal Aid, private legal practitioners and Victoria Police members. 

Your duties will include:

  • Case manage and negotiate files under supervision;
  • Conducting legal and policy research;
  • Under direction, appear and present evidence in court in proceedings which Victoria Police has an interest.
  • Liaising with Victoria Police members to provide advice on relevant legislation and policy.
  • Wide range administrative functions including collating statistics and maintaining manual and computerised records and databases.


As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer;
  • Possess a current practicing certificate to practice as an Australian legal practitioner or eligible to obtain.
  • High level interpersonal communication and negotiation skills.
  • Working knowledge and experience in relevant legislation, policy and legal practice pertaining to the role.
  • An ability to work under pressure, both independently and as a team member.


Requirements and relevant information:

  • This position is based at Wangaratta Prosecutions, 21-33 Handley Street, Wangaratta.
  • You will be required work at other locations, including Myrtleford and Wodonga.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • This position may require rostered hours, shift work, some public holidays and weekends. Shift allowances will be paid in accordance with the relevant Victorian Public Service Agreement.
