  • Working within the Freedom of Information Division, Public Support Services Department located at the Victoria Police Centre, 637 Flinders Street, Docklands, 3008*



About the role

The Freedom of Information Division was established after the introduction of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (‘the Act'). The Act confers on all members of the public the right to apply for access to documents held by Ministers, agencies and statutory bodies-  including departments, hospitals and educational institutions.

The Act has four main functions:

  • To provide a general right of application to access documents
  • To enable individuals to amend incorrect information about them held by government
  • To provide rights of appeal in relation to the previous two functions
  • To require agencies to publish certain details about themselves and their functions

The team at the Freedom of Information (FOI) Unit of Victoria Police processes these FOI requests, and provides advice in relation to FOI legislation and processes to our stakeholders.


Some of your duties will include:

  • Processing complex requests that are received by the unit and providing recommendations in relation to accessing documents within the 45 day timeframe
  • Participating in the management of the FOI function by reviewing and developing FOI policies, practices and procedures
  • Deliver training packages and presentations to all levels of Victoria Police members
  • Negotiating and consulting with stakeholders, including applicants and/or their legal representatives



As the successful applicant you will have:

  • A high level of interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • A demonstrated ability to develop, motivate and guide staff
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Proven ability to monitor client and stakeholder satisfaction as well as constructively manage stakeholder issues
  • Familiarity with the procedures of the Freedom of Information Commissioner, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, relevant to FOI appeals, reviews and complaints



Requirements and relevant information

  • The incumbent will be required to complete the OHS requirements of the organisation, which may include local level training relating to equipment usage and Hazardous Chemicals

*Your usual place of work will be within the Freedom of Information Division, Public Support Services Department; however you may be required to work at any other division within the Department as required.
