About the role:

The Academy Operational Safety Unit (OSU) delivers Operational Safety and Tactics Training (OSTT) to Victoria Police recruits and members on a bi-annual cycle.  The themes of training are firearms, defensive tactics, tactical communications and scenario/integration training.  The venue comprises multiple firing ranges, soft floor rooms, classrooms, virtual weapons simulator system and scenario village with streetscape. 

Primarily the position supports instructing staff when delivering programs, in a safety observation or intervention capacity or role play and other general duties.  A secondary capacity is to provide general administrative support to the unit including OH&S, injury investigation and facility management administration. 

Some of your duties will include:

The successful applicant will report to the Officer in Charge, Operational Safety Unit or via the leadership team (Sergeants – supervisors).  The role supports members at the unit, recruits (Police, Protective Service Officers or Police Custody Officers) and Victoria Police members attending requalification training.  Other stakeholders are OH&S consultants, WorkSafe and external equipment providers.   

The core duties of the role are:

  • Provide safety briefings and actively monitor physical training sessions
  • Implement or maintain processes to produce relevant safety reports
  • Conduct investigations into injuries/incidents and participate in prevention or reduction projects 
  • Assist with the management, maintenance or accountability of training equipment
  • Assist with management of facilities for maintenance and improvement
  • Where relevant, operate the various training systems

Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Participation in role-playing activities in support of the OSTT program
  • Operation and maintenance of the virtual weapons simulator in support of the OST training.
  • Provision of some instruction where external or previous experience is relevant.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Demonstrated experience in a range of project activities, from initiation through to finalisation, incorporating research skills and interpret data in support of continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of high quality safety initiatives through monitoring and intervention action to improve safety and efficiency.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and highly developed interpersonal skills which demonstrate the ability to effectively liaise with staff at all levels including senior members of the organisation, external agencies and customers.
  • A proven ability to work flexibly with limited supervision and/or as a member of a team, contributing to the team and organisation's goals.
  • An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs.
  • A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct, Financial Code of Practice, and the Organisational Values.

Requirements and relevant information:

You will be required to provide training support across multiple shifts with both day and afternoon shifts being undertaken at Academy OSU.

*Your usual place of work will be within the Operations Safety Division, People Development Command however you may be required to work at any other division within the People Development Command as required.
