As a Senior Police Lawyer with Victoria Police you will be provided an excellent opportunity to obtain valuable experience and progress your career. In order to address repeat victimisation, recidivism and unique offending across diverse demographics, more specialist courts are opening.

Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated advocates to prosecute a range of complex family violence intervention order matters across multiple court jurisdictions.  As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to manage busy court lists and competing priorities effectively while coaching, mentoring and developing junior Lawyers.


The role offers an opportunity to:

  • Tailor your skills to an array of matters that vary in complexity.  
  • Perform caseload management and offer legal advice and information to a range of clients.  
  • You will also be required to develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the expansive Victoria Police workforce as well as working with external stakeholders across agencies as part of a broad network to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.


As a Senior Police Lawyer you will be responsible for the day to day management and support of staff within the Police Lawyers Group in your work location.  

You will be responsible for:

  • The rostering and the coordination of Police Lawyers and Legal Support staff assisting and appearing in the Magistrates Court and Children's Court Family Violence and Criminal related prosecutions' lists.  
  • Providing support and assistance to Supervising Lawyers in the management of more complex cases dealt with at the County Court and in other jurisdictions as required. 
  • Managing strategies for appropriate representation in family violence and criminal related prosecutions, confiscations and county court appeal cases.  
  • Maintaining statistics and records for all police applications along with completing monthly reports for you designated work area.  
  • Case managing matters arising out of the implementation and roll out of policies and procedures to support the Automatic Number Plate Recognition Technology rollout.  
  • Also case managing matters arising out of the Civil Law and Licensing Services Units.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (Unrestricted Practising Certificate)
  • Ability to work in a team, in a developing and emerging work environment
  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence
  • High level understanding and experience as a court advocate
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring and developing junior Lawyers
  • A current Drivers' Licence

 

Requirements and relevant information:

*Your usual place of work will be within the Prosecutions Division (Legal and Prosecutions Specialist Branch), Legal Services Department, North East Prosecutions Region housed at Shepparton Prosecutions Unit; however you may be required to work at any other division within the Department as required.

You will be required to travel to and appear at satellite courts in the North East Prosecutions Region including but not limited to Wangaratta MC, Benalla MC, Mansfield MC and Seymour MC.

* This position may require you to work outside normal hours from time to time.

* As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Legal Services Department.  This supports the Department's commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
