Position Details

Working as a Police Lawyer with Victoria Police will offer you a great opportunity to progress your career and obtain valuable experience.  In order to address repeat victimisation, recidivism and unique offending across diverse demographics, more specialist courts are opening.

Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with an enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated Legal Police Lawyers to prosecute a range of complex family violence intervention order matters across multiple court jurisdictions.  As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to handle busy court lists and to manage competing priorities effectively.

The role offers an opportunity to:

  • Tailor your skill to an array of matters that vary in complexity.  
  • You will be expected to perform advocacy, caseload management and offer legal advice and information to a range of clients in the areas of Family Violence and criminal prosecutions, Civil Law, and other areas as required. 
  • Provide the opportunity to develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the expansive Victoria Police workforce. You will work with a range of stakeholders across agencies as part of a broad network that will ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm. 

Your role as a Police Lawyer will require you to attend and appear regularly in the Magistrates Court, Children's Court and as required to assist and appear in County Court Appeal matters.

Your responsibilities include:

  • You will have direct involvement in the prosecution of family violence intervention order matters on behalf of Victoria Police.
  • To succeed in these roles you will need to prepare court lists in advance of hearing dates, attend court to interview affected family members and affected persons (victims), respondents to applications and witnesses, and to liaise with legal representatives and court staff.  
  • You will be required to provide support and assistance to Senior and Supervising Lawyers in the management of more complex cases dealt with at the County Court and in other jurisdictions.  
  • You will also be required to provide professional guidance to Legal Support Officers as required by your senior managers.  You will manage cases related to family violence intervention order applications, criminal related matters, confiscations and proceeds of crime applications, firearms applications and licensing issues.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer
  • Ability to work in a team, in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence.
  • A current Drivers' Licence.

Requirements and relevant information:

*Your usual place of work will be within the Prosecutions Division (Legal and Prosecutions Specialist Branch), Legal Services Department, North East Prosecutions Region housed at Shepparton Prosecutions Unit; however you may be required to work at any other division within the Department as required.

* This position may require you to work outside normal hours from time to time.

* As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Legal Services Department.  This supports the Department's commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
