About the role:
This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain valuable experience working as a Police Lawyer within Victoria Police. Victoria Police's Legal Services Department is enhancing its advocacy response in an effort to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria. In order to address repeat victimisation, recidivism and unique offending across diverse demographics, more specialist courts are opening.

Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with a team of enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated Legal Support Officers and Police Lawyers to prosecute a range of complex family violence intervention order matters across multiple court jurisdictions. As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to handle busy court lists and to manage competing priorities effectively. Whilst the role will be challenging and dynamic, it will provide you with a rewarding experience and future possibilities for career progression.

Your duties will include:

  • The role offers an opportunity to tailor your skill to an array of matters that vary in complexity.
  • You will be expected to perform advocacy, caseload management and offer legal advice and information to a range of clients in the areas of Family Violence and criminal prosecutions, Civil Law, and other areas as directed. 
  • The role affords the opportunity to develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the expansive Victoria Police workforce. You will work with internal and external stakeholders across agencies as part of a broad network that will ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.
  • You will be required to attend and appear regularly in the Magistrates Court, Children's Court and as directed to assist and appear in County Court Appeal matters.  Your initial duties will directly involve the prosecution of family violence intervention order matters on behalf of Victoria Police.  
  • You will be required to prepare court lists in advance of hearing dates, attend court to interview affected family members and affected persons (victims), respondents to applications and witnesses and to liaise with legal representatives and court staff.  
  • You will be required to provide support and assistance to Senior and Supervising Lawyers in the management of more complex cases dealt with at the County Court and in other jurisdictions. You will also be required to provide professional guidance to Legal Support Officers as directed by your senior managers. 
  • You will manage cases related to family violence intervention order applications, criminal related matters, confiscations and proceeds of crime applications, firearms applications and licensing issues.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer
  • Ability to work in a team, in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence.
  • A current and valid Drivers' Licence is highly desirable.

  • This position may require you to work outside normal hours.
