About the role:
This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain valuable experience working as a Supervising Lawyer within the Police Lawyers Group, Legal Services Department at Victoria Police.  Victoria Police's Legal Services Department has enhanced its advocacy response in an effort to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria.  In order to address repeat victimisation, recidivism and unique offending across diverse demographics, more specialist courts are opening and the demand for prosecutorial services has increased.  Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated court advocates. As a Supervising Lawyer you will have the opportunity to provide legal supervision and legal professional development to Police Lawyers and Legal Support officers varying in skill and experience, as well as contribute to the improvement of processes and policies across the Police Lawyers Group Management portfolio.

The role also offers the successful candidate the opportunity to instruct and advocate in a range of matters managed by the Senior Advocacy Team across various jurisdictions including the Specialist Family Violence Courts, County Court and Supreme Court matters.

In this role, you will be required to develop and maintain collaborative internal relationships as well as work with external stakeholders across agencies as part of a broad network that will ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.

Your duties will include:

  • Providing legal supervision and professional development to a team of Police Lawyers within a designated portfolio/region.
  • Engaging with regional internal and external stakeholders in order to ensure the legal professional development and training needs of your designated workgroup;
  • Developing a workplace culture that is unique to your designated portfolio and ensure that employee engagement strategies are developed and executed;
  • Critically reviewing the work of the Police Lawyers and Legal Support Officers and introduce improvement practices that streamline the work undertaken by these units; 
  • Providing advice and appear in matters involving complex family violence litigation, including appeals and contested hearings and;
  • Developing processes to evaluate the work of the Police Lawyers and Legal Support Officers.


As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (Unrestricted Practising Certificate).
  • Ability to work in a team, in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence.
  • High level understanding and experience as a court advocate across all jurisdictions.
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring and developing Legal Professionals, including Junior Lawyers and Legal Support Staff;
  • A formal management qualification and formal teaching or training qualification would be advantageous.


Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) part time (0.4FTE), fixed term until 30/10/2020 position available. Salary is pro rata.
  • This position may require you to work outside normal hours.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
