2 x FO-3 – fixed term positions available until 30 June 2028
The Vetting and Triage Unit (VTU) is responsible for a new centralised model for the submission, receipt, and review of requests for forensic examinations. The role of centralised V&T is to receipt, assess and process all exhibit examination requests submitted to FSD. The VTU is connected to our customers and to the various forensic disciplines. A key unit objective is the facilitation of a consistent approach to the management of requests, collaborating with key stakeholders where required, and applying effective, appropriate and timely decision making.
As the successful applicant, some of your duties will include:
- Undertake V&T across forensic disciplines as part of a team and take responsibility for providing a timely and high-quality forensic science service in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Apply V&T criteria to inform effective decision making, including in the assessment of service requests and requests for exceptions and escalations.
- Consult discipline experts, investigators and other key stakeholders where required to support decision making.
- Develop fit for purpose examination strategies for service requests received by FSD considering the whole of case and multi-disciplinary perspective.
- Make judgements with limited direction in the provision of expert specialist advice to customers in line with experience and knowledge.
- Attend and assist at secondary locations under direction and supervision to transport items and samples where required.
- Maintain connections to forensic disciplines, including keeping abreast changing policies, procedures, and new developments.
- As part of a team assist in relevant research and development projects, and training, to improve methodology.
- Participate in business improvement activities.
- Present expert opinion evidence in Courts of Law where required relating to multi-disciplinary V&T decision making in an impartial and concise manner.
- Participate in accreditation duties and obligations as required.
- Maintain computerised records and compile statistical reports.
- Participate in accreditation duties and obligations as required.
- Maintain appropriate knowledge of Victoria Police and Department's policies, procedures and legislation and assist in any duties derived from those.
Skills & Experience
As the successful applicant, you will have:
- Scientific/technical achievement, ability to interpret examinations and to successfully present technical and discipline related knowledge and advice to scientific/technical and non-scientific personnel at all levels, particularly in a Court context.
- Proven commitment to quality in casework and/or research or the ability to provide it.
- Well-developed specialist subject knowledge with an emphasis on forensic science.
- Proven ability to work autonomously and/or within a team environment.
- Demonstrated Conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs.
- A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct and the Organisational Values.
Requirements and relevant information
- A relevant tertiary qualification is required.
- The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
- The successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only).
