  • VPS Grade 5: $113,022 - $136,747 plus superannuation.

About the Business Unit:

Integrity, Regulation and Legal Services (IRLS) supports the Attorney-General and the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) Ministers by providing legal, policy, integrity and assurance expertise to DJCS and Justice Ministers. We work collaboratively with key entities across the justice system and the department to ensure policy and legislation reform is strategic, relevant, holistic and people centred.

About the Role:

The Senior Legal Policy Officer has a primary focus on priority legislative reform projects and will work flexibly across a range of areas that are within the responsibilities of Integrity, Regulation and Legal Services Division. Ongoing projects currently led by Integrity Policy and Performance in IRLS include reform proposals to address worker harm, police oversight and public sector integrity policy spaces as well as supporting the implementation of key recommendations arising from integrity agency reports, inquiries and commissions.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Managing designated projects, undertaking research and evaluate evidence, developing policy proposals for legislation and regulations including drafting Cabinet submissions and Ministerial briefings, drafting instructions for Bills, regulations and legal instruments, and support for Parliamentary debates
  • Delivering high-quality and authoritative advice and written materials including solutions-focused policy papers, reports, briefings and presentations on policy and legislative issues and options for the manager, departmental executives, government and other key stakeholders
  • Managing multiple workstreams to enable the timely delivery of project milestones.

About You:

  • Highly-developed knowledge and experience of legislative and public policy processes or relevant legal practice experience
  • A strongability to adopt an innovative, strategic and solutions-focused approach to problem solving
  • A potent ability to consistently deliver high quality written and verbal advice, effectively analysing complex issues
  • A seasoned ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in law, policy or criminology and/or equivalent experience is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and delivering legislation and regulations is highly desirable.
