Department policy stipulates that salary upon commencement is paid at the base of the salary range for the relevant grade. An exciting opportunity exists for a full time Operations Manager – Projects in the Regional Service Network – West Area.

About us

H.M. Prison Barwon is a maximum-security prison located 6km north-west of Lara, 20km from the centre of Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne, and is part of the Barwon South West Regional structure. It is Victoria's major maximum-security prison for sentenced male prisoners.

About the role

The Operations Manager, Projects role will provide a critical operations function assisting with the delivery of allocated projects, ensuring that prison policies and procedures are followed. The role will involve working across multiple projects. The role will provide a critical interface between prison management and the Built Environment and Business Sustainability.

This role will also be responsible for managing a team of custodial staff who will supervise project staff including contractors and consultants. The role requires highly developed leadership skills, maturity, sound judgement and knowledge of prison operations and confidence in decision-making.

The role encompasses reporting (including financial), human resource management, including Performance Management, coaching and developing staff, Occupational Health and Safety requirements, E.E.O. legislation responsibilities, staff employment and training requirements.

Utilising highly developed communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, the role is responsible for the leadership, mentoring and motivation of staff to achieve identified objectives and service outcomes, whilst ensuring compliance with prison and court procedures.

About you

To be successful you will have:

  • The ability to contribute to Corrections Victoria achieving its Mission to deliver safe and secure corrections systems
  • Knowledge of risk management practices within a correctional setting
  • Previous experience in managing and leading teams
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and delivery (preferably in the constructions of institutional facilities)

It is a requirement of this role to work weekends and public holidays, which will be remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Determination.
