You will be a trusted advisor on National occupational health and safety and workers compensation issues, providing policy, secretariat and co-ordination capability to Senior Executives. Working closely with the Manager, Government and Executive Services (G&ES) and the Director of G&ES, you will also provide advice to the Minister for Workplace Safety and Chief Executive of WorkSafe on national policy developments, and on occasion will represent Victoria's interests at inter-jurisdictional officials' meetings. About the role

As Senior Strategic Policy Advisor - National Forums you are a trusted advisor on National occupational health and safety and workers compensation issues, providing policy, secretariat and co-ordination capability to Senior Executives. Working closely with the Manager, Government and Executive Services (G&ES) and the Director of G&ES, you will also provide advice to the Minister for Workplace Safety and Chief Executive of WorkSafe on national policy developments, and on occasion will represent Victoria's interests at inter-jurisdictional officials' meetings as appropriate. Other key stakeholders include the Chief Executive and Executive Directors of SafeWork Australia, inter-jurisdictional policy officers, Victorian government agencies, senior union/employer group officials and subject matter experts across WorkSafe Victoria. 

You will regularly review, analyse, advise on and develop policy and strategy against a variety of strategic, economic, legislative, regulatory and operational contexts.  A key aspect of this role is overseeing the preparation of timely, accurate and high quality agenda papers and briefing packages for the Minister for Workplace Safety, and for senior WorkSafe Victoria executives representing Victoria at national meetings. You will also provide secretariat services to committees as required whilst working across occupational health and safety, dangerous goods and workers compensation matters as they relate to national policy and operations. .

Key accountabilities can include:

  • Lead the preparation and review of agenda papers and briefings to support the Minister for Workplace Safety, and WorkSafe Victoria's representation on national forums
  • Provide secretariat services to forums chaired by WorkSafe Victoria representatives, with written or verbal briefings to the Chief Executive and other Senior Executives.
  • Support the G&ES Division and Management in representing WorkSafe at Victorian and national occupational health and safety and workers compensation forums
  • Lead the development of WorkSafe Victoria's responses to key national policy issues as they emerge, and understand the potential impact for Victoria.
  • Proactively identify relevant academic literature, case law, industry trends and research in other jurisdictions in identifying and addressing emerging national policy and regulatory issues
  • Provide expert strategic advice and critical policy analysis for the G&ES Management Team, WorkSafe's Executive Leadership Team (ELT).
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external), to provide critical advice and identify and understand key policy issues, needs and concerns

About you

To be successful in the role you will have exceptional leadership skills and experience in assessing Policy related issues, creating solutions, advising and supporting a variety of senior stakeholders. 

Additional Skills & Experience

  • Proven analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills, proactively identifying emerging trends, opportunities and issues, then developing effective responses
  • Excellent presentation (written/oral) and facilitation skills, and strong stakeholder management in creating positive networks and relationships (particularly with senior stakeholders)
  • Experienced provider of secretariat services and verbal briefings to senior executives
  • Confidence in developing strategic policy, with public sector expertise, particularly in relation to intergovernmental relations, occupational health and safety, workers' compensation or similar policy/regulatory environment
  • Experienced in providing high quality and rigorous policy advice on a range of complex issues within limited time constraints
  • Demonstrated ability to establish then maintain the trust and confidence of senior stakeholders, able to effectively influence and negotiate with the same

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in a broadly relevant discipline
  • Public policy or similar professional experience within public or private sector is well regarded
