As a Melbourne Gardens Horticulturist, you are responsible for providing knowledge, expertise and technical support as part of the Horticulture team. Your role is to deliver horticultural actions and  outcomes including garden maintenance, living plant collections curation, landscape projects, turf care, maintaining plant records, plant health, biosecurity and irrigation.

Success Profile

  • Trade Certificate, Advanced Certificate, relevant tertiary qualifications or other equivalent qualification and experience in Horticulture or other relevant professional field
  • Demonstrated experience in a large public garden, such as a botanic garden or other relevant experience, including demonstrated knowledge of current horticultural practices, plant identification and curation
  • Demonstrated ability to optimise plant performance, including knowledge of weed, pest and disease identification, plant biology and control using IPM strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records, including maps and plant performance information and ability to implement planting schemes
  • Demonstrated experience in the safe and effective operation of horticultural machinery and equipment, and selection and use of personal protective equipment
  • Completion of a Farm Chemical Users Course or hold an Agricultural Chemical Users Permit
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of high-quality customer service to visitors and other clients in a tourist destination, including the ability to communicate regulations in a courteous and professional manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a constructive member of a team, and to supervise and train apprentices, internship students, volunteers or other staff
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate appropriately to various audiences and to clearly provide professional horticultural advice.
