What You'll Do

You'll provide scientific leadership for RBGV's research strategy, championing high-quality plant science and fostering a collaborative, interdisciplinary research culture within the Branch and with public and private partners locally, nationally and internationally. You'll lead and manage the Research Branch, including financial and operational oversight, to deliver funded research outcomes in an intellectually challenging and stimulating environment. You'll make a significant personal contribution to RBGV's research program by leading research projects in your chosen field across systematics and taxonomy, population genetics, genomics and the conservation of plants, algae and fungi. You'll secure external grant funding and develop new research revenue streams, negotiating funding agreements and delivering contracted outcomes, while building the Division's scientific profile through major publications, conferences, collaborations and engagement with professional, industry and community groups. You'll provide advanced, research-based advice and policy input to support RBGV's corporate goals and reputation, including authoritative advice on biodiversity, ecology and conservation to state and federal agencies. As a member of the Science Management Team, you'll help set divisional priorities, targets and budgets, develop and implement strategic plans, manage the Research Branch's annual budget, stay abreast of advances in plant science, and translate these into impact through partnerships and collaborations while ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, standards and RBGV policies.

What You'll Bring

You'll bring a PhD in plant sciences with substantial postdoctoral experience, alongside national and international recognition as an expert in plant or fungal systematics and a strong record of publishing high-quality research in leading peer-reviewed journals. You'll have a proven ability to attract competitive external funding, demonstrate scientific innovation, and integrate new technologies into research programs. You'll offer advanced project management, research evaluation and commercial skills, with experience managing complex budgets, securing resources at senior levels, and delivering initiatives on a sound business footing. You'll build and leverage professional networks to anticipate emerging trends and opportunities, apply strong conceptual, analytical and decision-making skills, and communicate effectively with diverse audiences. You'll work confidently and collegially within multidisciplinary, geographically dispersed teams, while also showing the motivation and discipline required for independent research and leadership.

Please note, the start date for this position is flexible to allow for the preferred candidate to complete any current projects.
